The Kopis Returns

The Demko Knives AD20 Kopis V2 is designed with a tall, slicy, recurved blade on the standard thickness AD20 platform (0.180" nominal blade thickness). Compared to the original Demko Knives Kopis V1, the AD20 Kopis V2 has a taller primary bevel and a unique swedge along the spine of the blade that mirrors the cutting edge. Andrew and John Demko believe the full-thickness blade, combined with a tall grind, captures the hard-use, Performance First essence of the ancient Greek Kopis.

The use of CPM 3V steel was deliberate for this project because its composition allows the design to have a tall thin grind. 3V steel excels when other steels may suffer chips or deformations with tall, thin grinds under heavy use. While the blade may look beautiful, it is made for use. The recurved edge geometry allows for increased cutting length in a relatively short blade and increased slicing performance using draw cut methods. The mass of the Kopis blade is positioned farther forward than in standard grinds. Combined with a slight forward cant, this design works well for chopping and thrusting movements.

Inspired by Ancient Greece

The Demko Knives AD20 Kopis V2 is inspired by the ancient Greek Kopis swords used in the 5th century BC. The hallmarks of the Greek Kopis are its recurved blade and forward weight distribution. While most Kopis swords were short, one-handed blades, some were designed for longer reach. It was preferred by horse-mounted soldiers because the mass of the sword made it more effective than straight swords when swinging and chopping with momentum. While some more traditional straight swords worked better within a cramped phalanx formation, the Kopis was uniquely preferred by those who needed to clear spaces or maintain distances on the battlefield. The inherent utility in the forward weight distribution also allowed soldiers to use the Kopis as a light axe to perform camp chores between battles.

Limited Production

The AD20 Kopis V2 is part of the Demko Knives Limited Production (LP) collection. Models that carry an LP distinction are produced in smaller batches and less often than Standard Production (SP) models. Limited Production (LP) models are oftentimes made only once. Customers should not expect LP models to have future availability once a batch is sold out. Occasionally, Demko Knives chooses to renew LP models for future production batches using the same or different blade steels, colors, or configurations.
